What’s Good Food According to Australians?

We love food, and we love it fast. That’s the results of the most recent study of last year’s foodie stats for the Australian populace. According to LifeHacker, McDonald’s came in first place, with 29.5% of us visiting their eatery nearly three times per 4 week period. That means 3 in 10 Australians ate a burger and fries nearly once a week on average last year. That represents a big chunk of our food budget as a country, and we simply keep coming back for more. If you include every fast food chain in Australia, 55% of us ate at one every 4 weeks. Oh yes, we’ll supersize that!

The Domino’s Are Falling

In the same Gizmodo report, there was shock that Domino’s pizza didn’t rank higher relative to the other restaurants which required Australians to leave their home for food. One would think, with the trend towards shopping online and working from home, eating from home would have a respectable showing. Domino’s Pizza was fifth in the rankings, and Pizza Hut was seventh in terms of overall popularity. Clearly, being able to chug meals down from behind the steering wheel is preferable to waiting until getting home.

Want to change it up?

Join me in taking some time this weekend to stay home, go for a pleasant walk in the neighborhood, and buy some fresh produce from the local grocery store. If you aren’t a natural cook, google your favorite recipes and turn your kitchen into something Julia Child would be proud to call home! Good food can both taste amazing and be good for you if you pay attention to the food guides in the store; look for options that add flavor without adding too many calories.

If you can read, you can cook!

That’s what my dad used to say, and it’s the truth. While relaxing around the house, join me on GoodFood.com.au and try out some of the incredible, healthy recipes available for free online. If you find a new concoction that is simply too good to keep it to yourself, give back by submitting it for publication! Everyone needs help finding their way around the kitchen, and setting the table with some good food for the entire family.

Shaken, Not Stirred

Of course, what good is a home made meal without the perfect pairing of a fine wine, beer, or cocktail? If you really want to make a night of it, cook with a savory bottle of wine. You can even let some of it reach the food you’re preparing! While you’re flexing your culinary muscle, be sure to invite your friends!

The More, The Merrier

You could even start a tradition with a few of your favorite neighbors. Get together once a month for some homemade food, fine wine, and pleasant conversation! Any new hobby is better with friends, and while gossiping in the kitchen, be sure to swap some recipes. Nearly every family has that special dish that’s been passed down from generation to generation.

It’s time to let that secret out, and barter it for your neighbor’s secret recipe to that banana nut bread you look forward to every year! And don’t forget to come back to the site and share! It’s the least you could do, since we gave you the idea in the first place!

Get Your Party Hopping

Now that you’ve got the girl’s night in well underway, it’s time to get the guys in on the tradition too. Take the opportunity to try some of the excellent beers listed on goodfood.com.au’s extensive beer section!

There are reviews of literally hundreds of brews for every budget! Plus, with all of the microbreweries popping up, there’s a chance you could try something bottled locally. There really is truth in the saying that the closer to the tap a beer is, the closer it’ll be to your heart. The taste is truly unique.

Healthy Eating, Good Food, Friends and Spirits!

Need I say more? I can see you’ve got this party and new tradition well in hand, so don’t let me keep you anymore! Stay in, be merry, invite some friends, and show those fast foods joints what real Australian food tastes like!
