Five Important Reasons to Consider the Foods You Eat

It is very important to consider everything you eat and the impact it will have on your overall health and well being. Here Master Oh gives five reasons why it is important to consider what you are eating and making the best possible efforts to choose a diet that is healthy and fresh. You can find out more by visiting Master Oh’s website here.

  1. Chemicals: One of the simplest rules to follow when it comes to grocery shopping is to try to shop only on the perimeters of the grocery store. The reason for this is that in most grocery stores the healthiest, fresh foods are located in the outer aisles. Produce, fresh meat and seafood, dairy and even fresh juices tend to be located in these aisles. Most of the food located in the rest of the store tends to be processed foods that are packed with all of the undesirable ingredients you should be avoiding. Sugars, preservatives and many different chemicals all work together to cause a number of issues including poor heart and mental health and of course weight gain.
  2. White” Food: Another important aspect of eating healthier foods is trying to avoid “white” foods. White foods would include sugar, flour, white rice, pasta, potatoes, etc. If you use this as a basic rule you will be reducing your intake of sugar as well as avoiding foods that offer very little nutritional value. You will also be avoiding foods that are culprits for weight gain as well as contributing to a slower metabolism. Look for better alternatives such as sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes, spaghetti squash or thinly sliced zucchini instead of pasta and brown rice or quinoa instead of white rice.
  3. Raw Foods: When you cook fresh produce you are actually cooking away the nutrients. There is a raw food movement with people eating more raw foods. In fact, many vegans eat nothing but raw vegetables in their diets. Although this might seem extreme consider eating as much raw fruit and vegetables in your diet as possible and use this as your main source of snacks. Eat more salads and have one quarter of your plate for protein, one quarter with healthy whole grains such as quinoa or brown rice and the other half with a lovely salad or steamed veggies.
  4. Organic: Most farms use hormones and antibiotics for their livestock. For your meat intake try to eat only organic meat that has been produced without the use of hormones or other chemicals such as antibiotics. Grain fed animals will provide you with a healthier choice for your meat. If you can, opt to eat locally grown, organic produce as well to avoid chemicals or at least thoroughly wash all of your produce to remove harmful chemicals.
  5. Fish: Most people do not eat enough heart and brain healthy foods. Eat more fish. Fish is packed with many important nutrients and is considered a brain food that is also heart healthy.

If you take the time to prepare fresh, healthy food you may very well discover an entirely new world of flavours as well as a new view on what ingredients are required to enjoy delicious meals.
